Vintage Button Wedding Cake Pops

This post is actually a couple of weeks in the making now and I've been a bit absent - but it's been manic! But more of that for another post.

Two weeks ago I was asked to make some cake pops for a friend's wedding, cake pops for weddings are getting so popular now I love making them! I wish I could show you some pictures...but...well the dancefloor and the wine called so I have very few. I did however manage to get some pictures of the beautiful cake table sent to me so I could show you as I was so caught up in the Gangnam Style I completely forgot.

It was such a lovely reception with lots of quirky touches I'm fairly sure lots of people were taking notes! So I was sent a few pictures of ideas and they decided to go for some pastel coloured cake pops with fondant vintage style buttons on top, I even managed to find the exact mold online which I can't wait to use again - so many ideas!

The sponge was purple vanilla which looks great when you bite into them, held togetherwith vanilla buttercream and covered in purple, cream and pink chocolate and slightly sprinkled with hundreds and thousands.

The buttons were made up from fondant as I said, pastel colours to go with the chocolate and left in the fridge to harden and set before applying. They looked really cute and the colours contrasted really nicely I think it looked really effective. They had a whole sweet table set up even with their own personalised pick'n'mix section - amazing!

I think I'm becoming slightly obsessed with cake pops, tempted to try to cake pop maker...

Farewell Giant Cupcake!

Friday was the day we all said goodbye to our lovely boss Cathy from our designs of death corner.  We're all going to miss her so much, and as she doesn't like attention or fuss...that is of course what she got!

There were baloons, party poppers, flowers, sweets, present after present and of course....a cake! We all mulled over ideas for the cake which at one point included, coffins, leopard print and Christmas (because she hates it!) but in the end I decided to make her a cake I knew she'd really love. In fact if there is anything she really does love it's chocolate, Cadbury's and Rolo's to be precise!

So for the bottom I covered it in a layer of vanilla buttercream and covered it with chooclate fingers, you need two boxes for this as I only had about 4 left over, so don't eat any before you've finished covering it! I would however advise that you buttercream the top of the base and place the 'top' of the cupcake on before you add the fingers as if the base isn't tall enough it could push the fingers back out.

I decided to keep the top quite classic with vanilla buttercream piped with a 1M Wilton nozzle and then I placed a rolo in the middle of each buttercream rose and also one on top. For the front I made an ivory fondant heart and piped onto the front dots and the wording 'Jog On'....don't worry it wasn't mean, she loves this humour! :) I then gave it all a liberal dusting of pink edible glitter and tied some cream and brown ribbon around the bottom - which also helped keep the fingers in place!

Luckily she loved it and shared it all around the office...it's almost like we're going to miss her isn't it :(

Happy Birthday Dad!

I've been really busy with cake this week so only just now getting to put this post up. Last weekend I visited my dad for his birthday, which was actually wednesday but this way I got to spend the week with them in Southampton.

My dad is a very strange creature...he doesn't really like fondant...or buttercream. Madness! So when it comes to deciding what cake to make I knew there was only one choice, his favourite - my lemon drizzle! When I told him it must have been the only time I've ever heard him say he can't wait for cake! I did put him to work chopping the lemon zest as they didn't have a fine enough grater! :)

As it doesn't need decorating it meant I got to spend more time with them than in the kitchen, though of course my little brother wanted to help me make it, he's getting quite good now bless him - he was also having a pj day so did it all in his new Batman ones, complete with detachable cape!

You can find the recipe for my lemon drizzle cake here - I have to say, it's one of my favourites too. And while I couldn't decorate it properly, we did still add some candles and a little 'Happy Birthday' sign.

My little brother was a little grumpy this weekend (see above), but he loves it when I visit as I'm basically his toy. We play his games, have massive bubble bath fights and even had a dance off to 'Gangnam Style' thought somehow he ended up changing the words to 'Catch a star'.
