Home Made Ursula Outfit and Hairstyle

We love organising charity events at work, the most recent was Red Nose Day. We thought it would be fun to have a Heroes & Villains theme, I have dark heart so any excuse to dress up as my spirit animal - a villain, and I'm happy.

One of my favourite baddies is Ursula the sea witch, she's big, she's bold and she's badass, who wouldn't want to be her? So I of course took to pintest (feel free to follow me by the way 'Rockabillynikki') and I found loads of make up tutorials, some totally unrealistic but one within reach. But first I had to make my accessories. The most important were her eels, I'd seen a few versions online but I decided to go with the eels boa. I bought some fabric online and made a rough pattern, filled the eel with wadding, stitched it up, gathered some fabric on top and added the eyes and teeth. Then all I had to do was sew over the mouths for a bit of detail and it was good to go. I made it in one evening and although it's a bit rough around the edges it worked really well.

The last thing I had to make was her shell necklace (poor unfortunate souls!). I bought some Fymo clay and rolled it into a trumpety shell shape and indented some line to make it a bit more shell like. Creating a hole for the leather string and baking it until it's hard. I then covered it with gold food paint and sealed it all my nail polish to make it super shiny. Tadah!

I did play with face paint but honestly I looked like Veruca Salt from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the point where my mum took one look at me and we laughed to the point of tears for ten minutes straight.

So I ditched that idea, as the thought of walking around walk like a blueberry constantly having to touch it up made me want to die, so it went straight in the bin. And the make up came out! I used this Pintrest image as inspiration. I wasn't able to get mine this bright but I think I did an OK job for doing it myself. For the colour shadow I used Makeup Revolution, the palette isn't available any more but all of theirs are high pigmented and they have loads of bright shades.

I stuck to blues, purples and white and I used a liquid eyeliner for the tentacles and for the power brows. It lasted all day too so I was really pleased with that. I always feel that I can go bigger but I couldn't have been happier really.

Right. The hair. THE HAIR. I did think about getting a wig but hello?? I love playing with hair so I decided to give it a go. Turns out, two cans of white hair spray is not enough to cover bright red, it does every give you lilac hair. Spoiler alert - I now want lilac hair. I did think I looked a bit like the Fairy Godmother out of Shrek in the end, that might be my next one? I basically just victory rolled it all up, I don't often do the back so it was a challenge but I'm pretty pleased with the final result.

The next thing I had to do was to choose my outfit. I played with the idea of making tentacles but it was a lot of effort for a work event when I was also organising the bake sale I just didn't have enough time. And I wear a lot of black so I had plenty to chose from. In the end I went for a black pencil skirt from Primark and a black lace Bardot top from Very. The boa I ended up having to safety pin to my top so I didn't have to worry about carrying it around with me.  I didn't get a good picture but I also teamed them with some red glitter Irregular Choice shoes. And I'm not gonna like I felt pretty epic. To be pathetically honest I was so sad to have to take it all off when I got home. When can I please be Ursula again next?

Pretty Pastels And Florals From Primark

This weekend we took a day trip down to Southampton, my mum stock up at Fabric Land there for her sewing business and they have great shopping there. We also have family there which is why we go so much, otherwise it'd be a long trip for lycra. It was really hot all weekend but especially Saturday, and while I'm trying to snap out of dressing for winter 24/7 I still find myself wearing black jeans and cardigans almost constantly. As I did that day, black jeans, black strap top and black and pink mini kimono - which was light, but still.

So after we got four huge bags of lycra we dumped the bags at my brother's place and headed to Primark. I spent four years of my life working there, some at this store actually so going in midday on a Saturday does not worry me. I know how to shop in Primark, I know how it lives and how it works...I know where the good clothes hide and how the sizing works. Something, I probably shouldn't be too proud of but I am, it's like a marathon and if you don't take it seriously - you won't survive.

It's nearing the end of the month but I still couldn't resist spending £57 on a few items of clothing but mainly accessories. The first item I found was a blue skirt which fell just below the knee, and I mean 'just'. The thighs don't really come out often so this skirt covers them just enough that I won't wear tights. I love the vintage cute and fullness of this skirt (£10), it also has a pretty and subtle floral pattern which gives it a nice bit of texture without looking like curtains...although I'd still wear a skirt made from old curtains.

I've seen some prom dresses by Scarlett & Jo in Evans which I love the look of, but want something a bit lighter for the day so tried to re-create the vibe of the look. I found some of their basic round neck tops for £3.50 each which sits really nicely under the skirt. It also covers a good amount of my chest without any spillage - always a bonus, but still looks flattering.

I've always stayed away from belt, why? No idea! But I'm definitely a lover of waist belts. I picked up these beauties from £1 to £2.50 each. I'm not going to lie, I bought a couple of these because they're Figaro colours...the others because they'd look pretty with some of my rockabilly dresses. I teamed the outfit with the back and gold bow belt, it fits really well and is really cute. Must find other things to wear the others with!

A few of the other things I bought were two chunky floral and pastel necklaces. They make quite a statement and not normally something I would go for but I think they're really summery and WILL make an effort to wear more jewellery. I love the wire headband I picked up, I have a couple proper ones at home but this was a nice light one to wear, I have a weird shaped head and the bigger ones can often shift around but I'm hoping this one holds a bit better.

One of my favourite purchases was this mint satchel bag, again, most of what I bought was to match my car. I have zero shame and I don't care. I will not be happy until I find a mint coloured dress with the perfect cut...but I may just make one.

I bought a few other little essentials that weren't noteworthy but I find that place so good for all the little thing, there are gems there but you do have to hunt if you're not a size ten and 5"8 to get things to fit as you want when you have a particular idea like I did. Luckily, I found exactly what I was looking for. We also stopped for a quick bite to eat at a new American style diner Buzz in Southampton, do the biggest portion of non-sharing wings I've seen, alco milkshakes and epic burgers. My favourite was the chef's gourmet special - anything with a slab of goat's cheese is a winner in my books.

There were also these amazing wedding cars on Above Bar Street...totally want something
like this in my life.

Hopefully there'll be more posts of me looking like an actual girl...probably still in black.

My First Week Of Summer

It's not even the weekend at the week has been pretty good so far if counting from last friday. The sun is finally out, I've been able to put the roof down in the Figaro (Elvis) almost every day which has been brilliant and when you have a convertible is kind what you live for.

Sometimes it's the simple things in life...like making your own hair clip. I've ordered some bits from Janine Basil which I can't wait to turn up, check her out I'll do a post when I get them. It got me inspired to make my own so I used an only cherries patch and I just glued it to a crocodile clip and it worked pretty well I must say! Looks very good done up with my victory rolls. I wore it out to drinks with my friend and it looked pretty sharp, I won't lie.

On the Saturday I saw my cousin for a couple of hours and she was visiting for the weekend to see One Direction so I met her for lunch. I also managed to pick up some bits from Primark and this cute dress which only cost £7 in the sale, no bad! I just can't wear short dresses so it's nice to see some slight longer lengths being stocked. The sun was out again so couldn't resist a quick selfie
with Big Ben.

I wasn't very well on Sunday so I didn't do much but we did start watching Orange Is The New Black so that's what I'll be doing for a little while, it is my new obsession. I did however clean my car in the morning and I quickly put up the new sun screen I got for my car...come on, you gotta love it!

I got the new Passenger vinyl delivered this week which is simply STUNNING! I will have to do a post just for that on it's own, the sound is beautiful and the artwork is gorgeous, never been so in love with a vinyl sleeve.

Couldn't resist posting a classic dinner photo, I will never be able to be a vegetarian, I mean seriously look at them.  Ribs from The Golden Lion in St Ives.

I picked up these little beauties in Tesco has anyone else tried them? I'm not too good with lipstick for day wear and get on much better with tinted lip balms like these Maybelline Baby Lips, I bought Pink Punch, Cherry Me and Peach Kiss. They're really moisturising and taste great, new addition to the satchel.  Have a great weekend coming up no doubt there'll be pictures coming soon!

Summer's Coming!

I'm not usually one to embrace summer, sunshine? Yes. Excessive heat? Naaaaaah. But I am definitely looking forward to some sun, so I did a little shopping to get me in the mood.

I got a little haul from Primark, I used to work there so I know how to dig out the gems and find the good stuff. My favourite buys were these sunglasses, perfect for driving in my Nissan Figaro no? Costing only £3 I couldn't resist, I have a bit of a sunglasses obsession every season. The next is this kimono costing £13, I'm not normally one for the pink floral Hawaiian theme but I'm kinda loving it this year. I actually bought it two sizes small as it's so big it wasn't an issue.

I also found this cute pink and pineapple sleeveless top for only £6, you can't say no really. It kind of falls into the tiki rockabilly theme too so I couldn't put it down.

I wore the pineapple top and sunglasses while going to a car boot in search of vintage finds...where I found this picnic hamper! Costing me only £6 I didn't think it was too bad, it's not lined or filled but I think I'll match it to my back seat cover I did in pale green and white polka dot and hopefully find some cute picnic crockery to fill it with.

I was in Southampton this weekend to visit some family and I love the shopping there, the center is great. My little brother is obsessed with Lush and their bathbombs, whenever I'm down I always get him some as a treat and he usually gets a bag full at Christmas time. I did however pick up some Gorilla solid perfume in the 'Lust' fragrance for myself £5. It basically smells like the shop itself, like fizzing bathbombs dipped in sherbert. Can't recommend it enough for a little dab of gorgeous smell.

Cambridge really needs to get an Urban Outfitters, I only ever look at the home stuff and I do dream about owning one of their Crosley Record Players, but this time I settled for a new drinks container for work, I think it sums it up pretty well. £12 for something that makes me smile every day, totally worth it.

The last of my purchases came from Bobb-In & Sew and Dunelm Mill, I bought some new fabric, the flower fabric came from Bobb-In & Sew which I'm going to make a top/dress with. The blue fabric was in the sale in Dunelm Mill, it's the same fabric as my back seat cover for my car so I might make another and sell it as I've had some interest in them and there's a really cute blue Figaro it would be perfect for.

Watch this space! Who else is looking forward to summer?

Easter Weekend - Visit From The Vikings

I love Easter, who doesn't? It has to be my favourite time of year, second to Christmas of course. The daffodils are out, everything comes in yellow....and you get a few cheeky days off too which always helps. This year we had Norwegian family visiting for my cousins 16th birthday which fell on Easter Sunday, this is who I made the One Direction cake for.

I managed to get an extra day off as my mum couldn't so I could spend an extra day with them. We've done so much this weekend this is mainly going to be a photo post. On Thursday I took them around St Ives, it's a typical English town with historic features that couldn't be more 'English' and almost villagey in areas. We did some shopping, exploring the old roads by the river and even managed to fit in some lunch at the River Tea Rooms, my favourite place.

Friday and Saturday were spent in Cambridge. They'd never seen Primark before, everything in Norway is so expensive compared to here so it was no surprise that my cousin and I spent 3 hours in there..THREE! And I have to say it was great, trying on mounds of clothes and laughing at the awful ones, then comes the scary count-up at the end and trying to get the total down which at one point did hit £145! We then hit Nandos which again you can't find in Norway, and mainly because One Direction eat there, ate a stupid amount but completely worth it.

Saturday was a tourist day and we spent the day punting along the river Cam, walking around the old streets, seeing the Universities, the famous fudge shop, gold clock, man playing guitar in a bin (true story) and eating more food of course! In the evening we went out for Chinese and had the funniest evening ever, quite literally spent the whole evening in hysterics which was brilliant.

Easter Sunday came and I think I was more excited than the birthday girl and we didn't even let her have a lie-in! I love giving people presents and this was no exception. The family came over at various points, brothers and fiance/wife and my gorgeous niece so we could give them their eggs. Norwegian cardboard eggs filled with chocolates, my niece of course got the biggest (and pinkest). My little brother got one too which I sent down to him the week before. As not many in the house that day liked lamb we decided to have a big turkey dinner followed by the One Direction cake.

I have to say I love my Easter 'egg', a giant chocolate cupcake!! How perfect...not eaten it all yet... My mum loved the Mozart chocolate balls (don't laugh), so I got her a load of those and even tried making her an actual egg from the moulds I got in Poundland, I think it's definitely much easier to just buy them! But it still looked cute. Keep posted for all of the Easter treats I made.

I love the cupcake headband my niece got...I got one too! Handmade by Norwegian designer Fam Irvoll. These will now be our new baking gear for whenever we're together
Hope you all had a lovely Easter!!
